The series initially starred veteran movie supporting actor Ward Bond as the wagon master, later replaced upon his death by John McIntire, and Robert Horton as the scout, subsequently replaced by lookalike Robert Fuller a year after Horton had decided to leave the series.The series was inspired by the 1950 film Wagon Master directed by John Ford and starring Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr. and Ward Bond, and harkens back to the early widescreen wagon train epic The Big Trail starring John Wayne and featuring Bond in his first major screen appearance playing a supporting role. Horton's buckskin outfit as the scout in the first season of the television series resembles Wayne's, who also played the wagon train's scout in the earlier film.

Several skeletons are discovered on the tracks of a closed train station. However, one of the dead victims walks into the police station. Where did all these dead bodies come from, and who is committing all of these murders? The world split into two on the night of a murder 12 years ago, and Do Won chases after the hidden truth in the parallel universe. This drama shows the contrast between two different worlds, divided by two different choices.

After a night of wild partying and missing their train, the group of students is invited to board another which happens to be heading their way. Once on board, members of the team begin to go missing, and their would-be saviors claim to have no idea what could have happened to them... When they discover the truth, it is too late to escape and they must fight for their lives against their captors to put an end to their ride to hell.
